Boise, Idaho: City of Trees

Boise is the state capitol of Idaho and is located on a flat plain along the Boise River in Ada county, not far from the border with Oregon. The origin of the name "Boise" has been lost to history, but is believed by many to come from the name French Canadian trappers gave to the river in the 1820s: "La riviere boisee" or "wooded river."

Boise: the perfect blend of urban and rural

With a population of 202,000, Boise, Idaho is undoubtedly a city, but because of the distance between it and any other major population center (the closest city of comparable size is over 400 miles away) Boise offers its residents a chance to experience many aspects of country life as well. It's a perfect blend of urban and rural, which is why Boise has been nicknamed "City of Trees."

Some of Boise's "city" amenities include five health care centers, a state university, an airport, a public transit system, employment opportunities in technology and manufacturing, and access to both intercity train and bus services. On the "rural" end, Boise offers mountain views, large home lots, a Nature Center, numerous parks and green spaces, an extensive network of trails, and nearby access to sport fishing grounds and the Bogus Basin Mountain Resort.

This unique blending of lifestyles makes Boise, ID an attractive place to live whether you're a city or country dweller at heart, and many organizations have recognized Boise for it. It is the number one safest place to live with more than 500,000 residents according to Farmer's Insurace, number three on Forbes Magazine's list of best places for business and careers, number nine on Inc.com's list of hottest midsize city boom towns, and has received a top ten urban environment report card from the Earth Day Network.

Boise, Idaho's climate is classified as semi-arid. It has four distinct seasons so you won't miss out on anything. Boise has a hot, dry summer, a cool, crisp autumn, cold winters with plenty of snowfall, and a warm, wet spring. Boise hosts festivals and events to go with each season. The Morris Knudson Nature Center is open all summer, the Idaho International Film Festival is held in downtown Boise during the fall, Bogus Mountain runs skiing and snowboarding races in the wintertime and the Gene Harris Jazz festival occurs every spring.
